Gray Summit Attractions
Two unique attractions to the St Louis area are located in Gray Summit. The Shaw's Nature Reserve is an extension of the Missouri Botanical Garden and was created in 1925 when pollution from coal smoke in St Louis city was threatening to kill all of the plants in Shaw's Garden (Missouri Botanical Garden). The Garden's orchid collection was moved to the Reserve but the pollution had cleared up enough by 1926 that no other plants had to be moved. Today the Shaw Nature Reserve is 2,500 acres of natural and managed plant settings that act as an outdoor scientific laboratory and classroom. The other attraction in Gray Summit is Purina Farms that is owned by Nestle Purina and features a Pet Center with a 20 foot tall cat house, a 2 story barn where visitors can milk a cow, and much more. Purina Farms also hosts over 60 dog competitions a year where trained canines compete in herding competitions and the very popular event, the Purina Dog Chow Incredible Dog Challenge.
